COVID-19 and Asians

In recent weeks, there has been a lot of talk about this virus (Covid-19) and where it came from. There are some interesting theories/statements about its origin. Many are calling it the “China-virus” among other similar titles.

While, as far as we know, it did originate in China, this is not a reason to treat Chinese people or Asians in general harshly as if “they are a walking virus”.

I post this to remind our students, families, and anyone reading it that every Asian is not guilty of bringing this virus to our country. For example, there is a Chinese girl in our youth ministry who was adopted as a baby so clearly she didn’t bring it over now!

I encourage you all to keep this in mind as well as to reach out to your Asian friends just to offer support and encouragement. Read this article by Pa Yang to gain a fuller perspective on this particular dynamic.
